Quilting with Westalee Rulers on Your Domestic Machine: Rotating Templates: Circles, Wreaths & Medallions

Location: Mesa

To extend your skills quilting on your domestic machine with Westalee rulers.

Students will extend their work with rotating templates as well as get a taste of some more advanced options for creating medallions with templates from the Westalee collection of rulers for domestic machines.

Students will get hands-on experience creating a variety of beautiful medallions that require minimal marking and math skills. Students hands-on time will include work with circle, spiral and spin-e-fex templates from the Starter set of rulers purchased for the beginning Westalee Ruler Work workshop.

We will also show options more advanced work with medallions using other rotating rulers from the Westalee collection.

Materials to bring to class: 

  • Absolutely Necessary: Sewing machine with extension table and Supreme Slider (or similar)

  • Quilting gloves or bat scooters 

  • 40 wt machine quilting or embroidery thread and wound bobbins in your choice of color,  

  • Needles: embroidery needles or top stitch needles, whichever works best on your machine with 40 wt thread

  • Westalee Ruler Work Starter Set of acrylic templates specific to your machine and ruler foot. Rulers should be backed with stable tape from the Starter kit or similar to minimize shifting

  • At least one other type of rotating ruler from Westalee: Circles-on-Quilts, Spinning Wheels, Spin an Echo or Artisan Curves. Refer to the catalogs available online (see below) to see what is available, but please order through Mulqueen Sewing for the best prices. Allow at least 2 weeks for delivery if your choice of ruler is not already available in the store. 

  • At least 3 quilt sandwiches at least 18” x 18” made with low loft batting. Plain, light colored or tone on tone fabric will show off your stitching to advantage. 

  •  Quilt marking pen, chalk or pencil of your choice. 

  • Optional: Westalee cross hair ruler. (One will be available at the workshop to share.)


Workshop Agenda:


  • Introduction and short demo of 3 types of medallions:  20 min

  • Supervised practice with your own templates on medallions: 1 hr

  • Break: 10 min

  • Discussion and demo of advanced medallion templates: Artisan Curves, Spin-an-Echo and/or Spinning Wheels : 20 min

  • Supervised work on your own medallion samples  : 1 hr or time remaining

Preparing for the workshop:


  • Be sure to purchase your new templates in advance from Mulqueens. Depending on demand, it may be necessary to order them, so allow at least 2 weeks in advance of the workshop. 


  • You will not need advanced free motion quilting skills to succeed, but you will be more comfortable if you have some experience with stippling or other filler techniques commonly used in free-motion quilting.


  • Spend some time before the workshop with your Starter Kit rulers and ruler foot on the machine you intend to use for the workshop so you are comfortable with the basics of ruler work.

  • If you want to work on Artisan Curves, consider buying 2 or 3 different sizes of the shape of your choice. This will enable many more variations of these beautiful medallions.

  • To ensure that everyone gets the most benefit from our time together please plan to arrive in time to set up your machine before the workshop begins (15-30 minutes).
